Managing Successful Programmes (MSP™) Conversion — A 5-Day Course

Course Description

All organisations and companies undergo continuous change and improvement as a natural process. Programmes represent major change. They are complex, difficult and carry substantial risk. Programme Management provides a framework for managing such change. It provides a sound basis for managing collections of related projects that deliver change and benefits to the business.

Programmes involve many parts of an enterprise and a great deal of valuable resources. The impact of not managing them successfully could be considerable. Programmes require effective management to be successful.

This course will give delegates a sound understanding of the principles and practice of effective and successful Programme Management. A realistic Case Study develops throughout the course.

The course has been designed to prepare delegates for and comply with the syllabus requirements of the MSP™ 2007 Practitioner Examination.

Course Objectives

This course will provide delegates with a practical understanding of the OGC (Office of Government Commerce) approach to Programme Management (as documented in the book, Managing Successful Programmes 2007 edition) and the opportunity to practise essential aspects. It will also provide delegates with the opportunity to sit the MSP™ 2007 Practitioner Examinations.

On completion of this Managing Successful Programmes Practitioner training, delegates will be able to:

  • Explain how programme governance can be tailored to suit different programme and business environments
  • Explain how each of the Governance Themes can be tailored to suit a particular programme scenario
  • Apply the MSP defined Governance Themes to the activities of the Transformational Flow
  • Explain the MSP defined Principles as applied to the Governance Themes and Transformational Flow
  • Produce definition, governance and planning documentation as defined in the MSP manual

Suitable For

  • Programme Managers
  • Programme Directors
  • Managers involved in Business Change
  • Programme/Project Support staff and Project Managers who will undertake roles in Programmes
  • It can be particularly useful as an advanced Project Management course for senior and very experienced Project Managers and those seeking a professional qualification in Programme Management

Prerequisites

Delegates should have a good appreciation of the principles and sound practical experience of Project Management, ideally utilising a recognised structured methodology. It would be helpful if they have some knowledge and/or experience of strategic or business planning. Delegates are required to hold a current MSP™ Foundation Certificate.

Examination and Certification

The course has been designed to prepare delegates for the MSP™ 2007 Practitioners Certificate Examination, administered by the Association for Project Management Group Ltd (APM Group Ltd). This is a 3 hour, Objective Testing format examination, taken on the afternoon of the second day.

Please note, there is some pre-course reading which will be sent to participants prior to attendance and there will be some evening revision and exam preparation work throughout the course. It is assumed that delegates already own a copy of the OGC's 'Managing Successful Programmes' 2007 edition manual published by The Stationery Office (list price £45) which they will have been given when they attended the pre-requisite Foundation course.
