Cisco Certified Network Professional (CCNP)
New CCNP Certifications – Effective 25th January 2010
As of 25th January 2010, Cisco has updated its Cisco CCNP certification for network engineers through a comprehensive process involving customers and partners from around the globe. The revision focuses on the competencies that are needed to plan, implement, and troubleshoot the routed and switched networks of today and is designed to be more predictive of job readiness. Cisco has redesigned the CCNP courses and exams to reflect the evolving job tasks of global network professionals.
What Are The Changes?
4 courses are reduced down to 3:
- ROUTE – Implementing Cisco IP Routing - Largely updated version of BSCI class – 5 day Instructor led training + 7.5hrs E-Learning (on CD/DVD in pack with student Kit when they attend class. More labs 23% => 42%.
- SWITCH – Implementing Cisco IP Switched Networks - Largely updated version of BCMSN class – 5 day Instructor led training. More labs 33% => 52%
- TSHOOT – Troubleshooting and Maintaining Cisco IP Networks - Brand new class – 5 day Troubleshooting class; VERY practical – lots of labs (90+%) + 9.5hrs E-Learning (on CD/DVD in pack with student Kit when they attend class). Note: ROUTE & SWITCH are recommended prerequisites for TSHOOT.
ISCW & ONT go "End Of Life" (31st July 2010).
All existing CCNP Exams go "End Of Life" 31st July 2010(but if passed remain valid for new CCNP).
What happens to people already working towards their CCNP qualification?
It is possible to mix and match with BSCI & ROUTE and BCMSN & SWITCH.
Please see below for the revised recommended training courses paths to gain CCNP Certification.
CCNP Overview
The CCNP certification (Cisco Certified Network Professional) indicates advanced or journeyman knowledge of networks. With a CCNP, a network professional can install, configure, and troubleshoot local and wide area networks for enterprise organizations with medium-sized networks from 100 to more than 500 nodes. The content emphasizes topics such as security, converged networks, quality of service (QoS), virtual private networks (VPN) and broadband technologies. A CCNP certified network professional demonstrates the knowledge and skills required to manage the routers and switches that form the network core, as well as edge applications that integrate voice, wireless, and security into the network. The CCNP curriculum includes building scalable Cisco networks, Cisco multilayer switched networks, securing converged wide area networks, and optimizing converged networks.
A CCNP certified individual will be able to:
- Implement appropriate technologies to build a scaleable routed network
- Build campus networks using multilayer switching technologies
- Improve traffic flow, reliability, redundancy, and performance for campus LANs, routed and switched WANs, and remote access networks
- Deploy QoS, VPN, and converged networks in the enterprise
- Troubleshoot an environment that uses Cisco routers and switches for multiprotocol client hosts and services
Intended Audience
This CCNP certification is intended for network technicians responsible for implementing and managing medium sized business networks.
Prerequisites:
Valid CCNA certification.
Recommended Training
The recommended training courses for gaining CCNP are:
- Building Scalable Cisco Internetworks (BSCI)
- Building Cisco Multilayer Switched Networks (BCMSN)
- Implementing Secure Converged Wide Area Networks (ISCW)
- Optimizing Converged Cisco Networks (ONT)
- Implementing Cisco IP Routing (ROUTE)
- Implementing Cisco IP Switched Networks (SWITCH)
- Troubleshooting and Maintaining Cisco IP Networks (TSHOOT)

CCNP Wireless Certification
CCNP Wireless certification addresses the need for designing, implementing, and operating Cisco Wireless networks and mobility infrastructures. CCNP Wireless certification emphasizes wireless networking principles and theory. It also recognizes the expertise and technical acumen of wireless professionals who can assess and translate network business requirements into technical specifications that in turn, are incorporated into successful installations.
CCNP Wireless is a professional level certification, which serves as the next step for individuals who have completed their CCNA Wireless certification and are interested in advancing their career in Cisco wireless technologies.
The wireless network continues to grow in part, because of the additional productivity that it brings to the world as a whole. Properly trained and certified individuals are needed to make wireless networks secure, cost-effective, and reliable. CCNP Wireless certification recognizes this growth, and acknowledges advanced level skills and knowledge in Cisco wireless networking.
Recommended Training
The recommended training courses for gaining CCNP Wireless are:
- Implementing Cisco Unified Wireless Voice Networks (IUWVN)
- Implementing Cisco Unified Wireless Mobility Services (IUWMS)
- Implementing Advanced Cisco Unified Wireless Security (IAUWS)
- Conducting Cisco Unified Wireless Site Survey (CUWSS)
