Being a Leader — A 2-Day Course

Course Synopsis

  • Are you managing but need to be leading?
  • Having trouble identifying how to be a proactive leader?
  • Need to know how to make an impact with your leadership?
  • Want to improve your credibility and trustworthiness?

  • Do you lead thinking / design / direction / people?

If the answer is "YES" - this is the course for you!

Leadership is about inspiring, having vision, getting people to follow you, creating motivation and desire to do things the way you and your organisation want to do them. Managing is about finding the most effective and efficient way to do those things. You may well manage as lead: this course is about leading.

When you have a strategic plan you can look forward with confidence and certainty, giving positive direction to teams operating in a global environment.

This course will show you how to assess your organisation, how to plan for and spot future trends, the associated risks and communication of the big picture in the face of constant change.

  • Recognise how you lead individuals, teams and across your organisation
  • Understand your organisation's organisational structure
  • Work effectively within the decision making process at your organisation
  • Gain ideas for alternative solutions and approaches
  • Influence the decision making process using your source of power
  • Communicate in a positive and concise manner

  • Use industry standard tools & techniques like SWOT and PEST
  • Use future modelling to understand trends
  • Interaction with other people with different communication styles
  • Experience in using new tools to collect and structure information

Intended Audience

This course is intended for:

  • Anyone who needs to lead something will benefit from the skills on this course. Whether you lead a team of people, a business, a process, design, thought or anything else.

Benefits for your Company

Bennis (leadership author) says many staff feel that they are 'over managed and under led'. This goes for things too. Management is more pressing and demands constant attention, leadership is vital to sustained progress but by definition must be proactive. Companies without decent leaders will wither into obscurity. Those with great leaders inspire their people to achieving ever more in better ways.

Benefits for You

Being able to confidently decide where you are going and have the tools at your disposal to do so in a confident way will mean that you can concentrate on looking ahead and trust that people are moving collectively towards the same goals.

Outline Course Contents

Introduction & Welcome

You will meet other delegates in a similar position of responsibility to yourself.

An experienced, friendly trainer will ensure the course focuses on the particular skills you want to develop.

Leadership

This session uses group discussions to identiy what is expected of leaders in your organisation and what skills are needed for this role. You will use a situational leadership questionnaire to assess your preferred style and effectiveness. How to be a leader not a manager.

Being Decisive

You will discuss how your organisation's organisational structure reflects its decision making process. We will discuss barriers to good decisions, levels of authority, stakeholders and how/who to influence to achieve impact within this arena.

You will assess where you can gain input into the process and what alternative solutions exist. We will use the 'scope/time/cost' triangle we will look at ways of communicating issues to decision makers with positive & powerful feedback.

What is a Strategy?

Via a brief roundup of the background reading set we will decide on what strategy means.

Organisational Analysis

We will analyse the strengths and weaknesses for your organisation and one of the Telecoms case studies you have researched specific to the wireless market. We will look at organisational lifecycles and decide where your organisation is and what this means.

Future Modelling

You will learn some creative thinking techniques that will allow you to see trends within your industry and discuss what may come next in this market.

This will allow you to focus on what risks and opportunities may arise in order to move with these changes.

Risk & Opportunity Management

Looking at organisational risk registers and the opportunities noted so far, you will do some scenario planning to look at what needs to be put in place to mitigate the risks and foster the opportunities.

Vision & Motivation

You will spend some time analysing what your team vision is and how to communicate that most effectively. You will look at skills in active listening and a questioning technique to ensure you quickly drill down to the heart of the matter, so that you communicate like a leader.

Action Plan

You create an action plan to improve your leadership skills back at work.
