Outline Course Contents

Introduction & Welcome

You will meet other delegates in a similar position of responsibility to yourself. An experienced, friendly trainer will ensure the course focuses on the particular skills you want to develop.

Issues Requiring Talent Management

You identify in small groups the issues that mean you need to take action in term of identifying and growing talent. These could be an aging population of senior managers, fast growth, rapid promotion etc.

What is Talent and How to Identify it?

Where to look for current talent / high performance internally:

  • Architects - people who push back constructively, who believe passionately that there is a better way to do things and couch their arguments in terms of how it will benefit our customers
  • Boundary jumpers - people who work across the organisation, when you wouldn't expect them to do so, in order to achieve a goal that would delight a client
  • Pied Pipers - people who capture the imagination of other people, and drag them along by the force of their personality

Growing the Talent

You will discuss three ways of growing talent.

  • Giving people enough resource to make changes happen
  • Giving them high level sponsorship to remove barriers
  • Ensuring that the only reality check is provided by our customers not by our internal processes or prejudices

Talent vs Competency

We look at the Gallup research around talents and what impact this has for your organisation. We also look at case studies around developing talents unequally for maximum organisational and personal gain, rather than the standard models of pushing all competency levels to a baseline.

Workshop

You will then workshop what that means for your company and come up with alternative ideas of sponsoring talent.

Growing People

We look at competencies and learning styles to assess how people grow when they are managed properly and what a personal development plan looks like / sounds like / feels like.

Finally we will use the GROW coaching technique to learn how to get individual's take responsibility for their own development. You will role play giving and receiving feedback as well as coaching using GROW so that you can effectively assess and improve team performance.

Managing Performance

You will learn how to assess the performance of others. We will look at giving and receiving positive feedback rather than neutral or negative in terms of shaping team behaviours. You will use the feedback to improve your performance and check you get your message across in a professional and respectful way.

You run a sample appraisal.

Mentoring

You will look at mentoring including the GROW methodology to show how you can nurture the talent in your teams.

Action Planning

Using our planning tool, you will identify talent within your teams, define how you will grow that talent and assess how you will backfill their advancement.
