Outline Course Contents

Introduction & Welcome

You will meet other course delegates and discuss what you love / hate about presenting. An experienced, friendly trainer will help you visualise where you want this course to take you. You will present yourself to the group.

Prepare the Ground

You will learn how to carry out effective audience research and questionnaires where appropriate.

We will discuss the nature of performance and the space and potential of performing.

You will get involved in discussions about the nature of performance and present briefly about a performance you have seen.

Prepare Yourself

This is about getting yourself mentally and physically prepared to present. We will discuss what stage fright is and strategies for dealing with all its symptoms.

You will practice a relaxation technique for both your body and your voice.

Styles of Presentation

We will discuss circles of attention, performance dynamics, internal vs external focus, how to deal with your energy flow and when to use impromptu or ad-hoc speech.

You will analyse your own energy flow and discuss how to use the techniques described.

Techniques

These are the building blocks of presenting well. You will learn about owning your space, bridging gaps between topics, cultivating a performance image, using visual aids, developing vocal range, quality and power, using pauses and silences and changing from your normal voice to your amplified voice. A number of exercises, games and mini presentations will allow you to practice and develop these skills.

Involving the Audience

This is the part many delegates feel uncomfortable about and yet it is the easiest way to relax and get the audience on your side. We will look at how to get them on your side, how to encourage participation, choosing respondents and asking the right questions.

We will also deal with handling unsolicited audience involvement and awkward questions. You will learn how to judge what is an appropriate response, targeting humour, timing the delivery of the response, building their confidence in you and effective recovery techniques.

You will role play various scenarios to practice dealing with the most awkward and irritating interruptions as well as normal 'genuine' interruptions to ensure you can spot the difference under pressure.
