Structured Business Communications — A 1-Day Course

Course Synopsis

  • Do you tend to dive into detail when describing your ideas / progress to others?
  • Need to communicate messages in a compelling & easy to understand way?
  • Do audiences often 'look lost' or report having 'lost you' when you present?
  • Do your messages (written or verbal) lack punch or memorability?
  • Do you need people to act on what you say?

If the answer is "YES" - this is the course for you!

Confident and capable communicators will share knowledge and create clarity in whatever forum they operate in. Improving your message delivery will give you massive benefits in terms of the speed and comprehension of your message.

Bring along samples of reports, emails or other documents that lack the 'punch' you had hoped for.

Course Objectives

On completion of this training course, delegates will be able to:

  • Clarify the message of any communication you receive
  • Identify the information that is essential to the message you want to carry to the recipient
  • Structure your response to support the message
  • Understand the key stages in preparing and delivering effective presentations
  • Use Pyramid Thinking to organise complex or large volumes of data into a coherent story
  • Recognise the mistakes that stop you being understood
  • Become aware of and able to modify your non-verbal communication
  • Learn the 3 golden rules of communicating
  • Learn how to communicate on purpose

From the Practical Workshops, students will:

  • Practice using the 3 golden rules
  • Practice using the pyramid structure on our examples and your own information
  • Create a brand new structure for an important piece of work you are currently working on

Intended Audience

This course is intended for:

  • Anyone who wants to communicate in a more sophisticated, clear way that gets attention and then builds consensus.

Benefits for your Company

People who can communicate ideas quickly and simply will be able to manage and lead others more easily as there will be clarity instead of confusion. Also, these kinds of people create drive and motivation by the way they speak and this is high on the list of wants for staff for anyone running a company.

Benefits for You

You will encounter less resistance and frustration with your ideas. Trust and respect will be easier to earn as you will know how to choose an appropriate approach for every communication.

Outline Course Contents

Introduction & Welcome

You will meet like-minded people and discuss the types of communication you use. An experienced, friendly trainer will help you visualise where you want this course to take you. Who are the great communicators you know of, what would it be like to have their skills?

Who Are You?

This session looks at what you believe about yourself, as you unconsciously shout this message to everyone you communicate with.

Deliver Your Message

You discuss the 3 Golden Rules of communication and the use of the 6 wise friends and mind maps. You practice using the 3 Golden Rules for various pieces of communication.

Best Practice: Structure

We look at Pyramid Thinking to add a professional, clear and compelling introduction and structure to your reports and presentations. Using the bottom, top down approaches we create robust structure with sound conclusions. We then look at SCQA - a great tool for making compelling introductions. You will practice these tools with some of our examples.

Pulling it All Together

You start from scratch with your piece of communication and look at the three golden rules, then create a pyramid structure and introduction for your own piece of communication.

Action Plan

You create an action plan for your next piece of communication.
