Why Project Management is Important

Whenever we decide we want to do something, go somewhere, build something, achieve something, we need to know the answer to some questions.

These are typical questions asked at the start of any project and the answers are the building blocks of project management - defining what we want to do and working out the best way we can do it.

The project management skills you learn on our training courses can help you deliver your projects on budget, on time and which meet the expectations of your stakeholders.

PRINCE2® Courses

PRINCE2® is often cited as the world's most widely used project management method. Its success is largely due to it being non-proprietary but also due to the ability of organizations to apply it to a variety of industries, environments and project sizes.

Structured project management means managing the project in a logical, organised way, following defined steps. A structured project management method is the written description of this logical, organised approach. PRINCE2 is a structured project management method.

PRINCE2 is a process-based approach for project management providing an easily tailored and scaleable method for the management of all types of projects. The method is the de-facto standard for project management in the UK and is practiced worldwide.

Since its introduction in 1989 as a government standard for IT project management, PRINCE2 has been taken on by both the public and private sectors and is now recognised as a de facto standard for project management.

PRINCE2 is a flexible method and although originally designed for the management of IT projects it is now aimed at all other types of project.

PRINCE2 takes all the simple and obvious lessons learned by thousands of professionals in the past 20-odd years and presents them in a checklist for present clients, managers and their teams.

To become a qualified Prince 2 Practitioner, you MUST pass the PRINCE2 Foundation Examination and then the Practitioner Examination, in that order. You can sit both exams in the same week, or you can split them and sit them a few months apart. If you pass both examinations in the same week, you will receive a Practitioner Certificate but not a Foundation Certificate - as you cannot sit the Practitioner exam without first having passed the Foundation, it is not necessary to send a separate Foundation Certificate.

APM Courses

The Association for Project Management (APM) is the UK's leading professional body for Project Managers and the largest independent professional body of its kind in Europe. It has over 15,000 individual and 400 corporate members throughout the UK and abroad. The APM PQ assesses whether a delegate can apply appropriately those knowledge areas defined in the APM Body of Knowledge (APMBoK).

The APM Certificate in Project Management has been developed by the APM in association with the Department for Education and Skills (DfES). It is a certificate for individuals who require recognition for their project management knowledge and awareness in a general or non-project business environment.

The APMP is a professional qualification that recognises an individual's knowledge and experience in Project Management. It is awarded by the Association for Project Management, the UK professional project management association. It is designed for Project Management professionals in any industry.

For both courses listed below delegates have the option to sit the APM Introductory Certificate in Project Management exam on the last day of the course.

For candidates who require comprehensive exploration of the APM Body of Knowledge (APMBOK)

For Candidates that hold PRINCE2 Practitioner Certification

For Candidates with strong existing knowledge of the APM Body of Knowledge (APMBOK)

This course prepares delegates to achieve a professionally recognised qualification in project management at IPMA level C and is designed to prepare delegates as candidates for the APM PQ assessment centre. It provides information on pre-requisites and allows delegates to participate in activities similar to those by which they will be assessed.

The APM Practitioner Qualification is for project managers, project coordinators and team leaders who have three to five years experience in managing non-complex projects.

This is an intermediate qualification for project management practitioners who can demonstrate an ability to manage non-complex projects or run a key control function of a large-scale project. This qualification (IPMA Level C) is for any relatively experienced professional who is looking to demonstrate their ability.

Candidates wishing to take the Practitioner Qualification normally have passed the APMP Qualification or met prerequisites as described in the course outline

Risk management is a distinct and specific area within the APM Body of Knowledge (APM BoK) and a key control function within any project or programme.

All projects contain risks and the effective management of risk can have a significant impact on the success of projects. The exam syllabus is primarily based on the APM BoK, the APM PRAM Guide, and BS6079 Parts 1 & 3.

Portfolio, Programme & Project Office (P3O®) Courses

What is P3O?

Primarily an effective P3O model provides operational efficiencies in the successful delivery of business change initiatives and at its bests a P3O model is an integral part of ensuring that the strategies and performance requirements of an organisation are realised via projects, programmes and operational business units. The P3O model establishes a joined up set of outcomes and ensures that benefits are measure managed monitored and refined to ensure that optimal investment and strategic goals are achieved.

3 P's - Portfolio, Programme & Project, together, these 3 disciplines, help to ensure an organisation's strategy is delivered appropriately. A P3O model provides a decision enabling and delivery support structure for all change within an organisation, whether large or small.

Correct implementation of this office or structure where an organisation's Business Change Projects and Programmes come together can result in the following actions:-

It is possible for an organisation to deliver these strategic change management goals without the involvement of P3O but the results will be achieved in a fragmented and unstructured way that generates significant threats to the best use of scarce resources and achievement of required outcomes.
